MISCHIEVOUS Ferrari – Stefano Domenicali
MISCHIEVOUS Ferrari
chief Stefano Domenicali has suggested that Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton would both be happy to join the legendary Italian team.He said double world champions Vettel and Fernando Alonso could “co-exist” as team-mates.
And he insisted Hamilton could be a candidate for a Ferrari drive in 2013.Vettel’s contract with Red Bull expires in 2014, while Alonso is signed up at Maranello until 2016.However, Vettel has made no secret of his desire to race for Ferrari one day. After winning the Italian Grand Prix last month, he said the only thing that could have made victory sweeter “would be wearing a red suit”.Alonso has a reputation for demanding No1 driver status within a team.
But when Domenicali was asked if Alonso would accept Vettel as a team-mate, he replied: “I think they could co-exist. Fernando’s strength is not being afraid of anyone.”Ferrari’s other current driver Felipe Massa has a contract that expires at the end of next season. But the Brazilian appears to have lost his edge after his life-threatening accident in Hungary in 2009.Domenicali said: “Massa will do everything he can to show that he is worthy of Ferrari.”And other drivers with contracts expiring will want to show that they’re ready to come to Ferrari. Hamilton is probably among those but it’s early yet.”
Domenicali omitted to mention that neither Vettel nor Hamilton would want to jump into a slower car.Ferrari have had a dismal season with only one win at Silverstone in July. With four races remaining, Alonso is third in the drivers’ standings and Massa is sixth. In the constructors’ standings, Ferrari are third 226 points behind Red Bull and 96 points behind McLaren.Domenicali said the team’s focus has shifted almost exclusively to next year’s car.He added: “Everything will change, including the steering wheel.”
